Camp Hill, Alabama is located in southeast Tallapoosa County and is a community in need of significant investment. According to the 2020 US Census, Camp Hill has a population of 1,006 residents, of whom 30% are over the age of 60, and 41% live below the Federal poverty line. There are numerous environmental and public health concerns faced by the residents of our community. In 2023, a once-in-a-century hailstorm caused significant damage to 200 local residences. Without an emergency declaration providing FEMA assistance, many of our community’s most disadvantaged residents have homes that are no longer watertight or airtight. As a result, they are experiencing both a significant reduction in energy efficiency and poor air quality exacerbated by rot and black mold. Our community is also without both a doctor and grocery store. Living in a healthcare and food desert increases the risk for public health issues including diabetes, heart disease, mental health disorders, asthma, malnutrition, and risky pregnancies. Both of these problems are further amplified by the lack of local jobs and commerce that are reflected in a lower employment rate (31.3%) compared to the rest of the state (55.8%) and an average work commute of 28.1 minutes one-way, as well as a higher percentage of disabled residents (19%) compared to the rest of the state (16.7%).
